San Franciscans rely on Friends of the Urban Forest to help them plant and maintain trees for a more beautiful and healthy city. Since 1981, FUF's community-based tree plantings have literally transformed the cityscape, adding 40,000 trees to the streets of San Francisco - more than 40 percent of the city's street trees. We encourage all San Franciscans to become stewards of their trees and their neighborhoods, and to become advocates for a larger, healthier urban forest. Along with beauty and oxygen, trees make an important and positive impact upon our city's ecology, helping to mitigate traffic noise, offering wind protection and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. FUF sponsors a year-round tree care program for low-income youth, offers a popular series of free walks, and conducts regular educational programming in addition to tree planting and care.
